Grilling Summer’s Bounty is easy and delicious!

If you haven’t enjoyed grilled peaches, you are missing out.  Eating a grilled peach reminds me of Grandma’s home-made peach jam.  The natural sugars in the peach caramelize on the grill.  And, most any peach can be turned into a flavorful treat by grilling it.

And there are so many ways to use these deliciously jammy treats.  They make delicious appetizers.  For instance, they make a wonderful summertime bruschetta. For a stunning presentation, present chopped grilled peaches over fresh burrata cheese. When served with toasted slices of french bread, this becomes a simple appetizer to serve guests in just minutes.

The Peaches

Any type of peach will work well for grilling.  Of course, sweet juicy peaches will grill up wonderfully.  But I have found that those peaches that are lacking in flavor and texture, improve and become more edible by grilling them.

The trick is to use a firmer peach, before it begins to soften.  The ideal peach is one that just barely gives to the pressure of your thumb at the stem.   If they are over-ripe,  they can still be grilled but they will not hold their shape.  But they will make a great jam for your toast.  You cannot purchase a sweet, peachy jam that is sugar-free that will have flavor like this.

How to Grill A Peach

Grilling peaches is simple.  Slice the peach in half by cutting from the stem to the bottom and continuing back up the opposite side to the stem. Gently twist the two cut halves in opposite directions of each other. One half of the cut peach should pull clean away from the pit. The remaining half will still have the pit intact. Remove the pit by gently prying away from the flesh. Or run the edge of a paring knife around the pit and pop it out.

After halving and pitting the peach, dress each peach half with one or two drops of olive oil and rub the two halves together.  Sprinkle with a pinch of kosher salt.  They are ready to place on your pre-heated grill.  In just a 7-8 minutes,  the peaches are ready to cool and be enjoyed!

Enjoying the bounty!

The grilled peaches can be diced or sliced and served immediately.  Serve them as side dish or add them to a salad. Use these sweet peaches as a sugar-free topping for your pancakes, breakfast bowl, oatmeal or toast. Additionally, they can be made in advance and saved for later.  If I am not using them right away, I store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.  The juices from the peaches will ooze out and thicken, creating a delicious sauce that can be poured over your ice cream, or quinoa bowl.  It’s fabulous!

  • Total Time: 13-15 minutes

  • Category: Sides and Toppings
  • Method: Grill
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 Peaches, halved and pitted
  • 2 drops of olive per peach halve
  • Pinch of Kosher Salt

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat Grill, to medium-high heat.
  2. Place 1-2 drops of olive oil on each peach halve and rub two halves together.
  3. Sprinkle lightly with a pinch of kosher salt.
  4. Place peach on grill cut-side down.
  5. Grill for 3-4 minutes.
  6. Rotate 90 degrees, still cut side down and continue cooking for about 4 additional minutes.  You will find it is easier to rotate the peaches using a metal spatula.  A metal fish turner will work well for this, if you have one.
  7. Remove from grill and place on a dish to cool before serving.
  8. Store cooled peaches for later use in air-tight container in the refrigerator for three-four days.  Because the peaches do not have any added sugar, the shelf-life will be considerably short.
